West's journey to basketball stardom began in the coal country of West Virginia. After graduating from East Bank High School, he attended West Virginia University, where he was a three-time All-American. In 1960, he was selected by the Minneapolis Lakers as the second overall pick.

As a player, West established himself as one of the most complete guards in NBA history. He was known for his exceptional ball-handling skills, quickness, and deadly outside shot. With the Lakers, he won three NBA championships (1972, 1980, 1982) and was named Finals MVP in 1969.
