New Mexico Wildfires

Acres Burned, Evacuations Announced

Crews are battling two wildfires in southern New Mexico, including the South Fork Fire on the Mescalero Apache Reservation and the Salt Fire in Otero County. The South Fork Fire has burned approximately 13,921 acres, while the Salt Fire has scorched 4,876 acres.

Mandatory evacuations have been ordered for Ruidoso Downs, the Village of Ruidoso, Upper Canyon, Brady Canyon, and Ponderosa Heights due to the South Fork Fire. The fire has also prompted the closure of Highway 70 between mile markers 285 and 308.

The Salt Fire is burning in a remote area and has not yet threatened any structures or communities. However, officials are urging residents to stay informed about the fire's progress.

Firefighters are making progress on both fires, but containment is still low. The South Fork Fire is 20% contained, while the Salt Fire is 0% contained.

The cause of both fires is under investigation.

Residents are urged to stay informed about the fires and any evacuation orders. More information is available on the websites of the New Mexico State Forestry Division and the Mescalero Apache Tribal Emergency Management Office.
